Understand your comments, but your problem was the Nokia phone, not voip.
Agree about setting things up, as I said earlier, a setup should only require 3 entries to be made. Do agree that most hardware has so many settings that an average person can very easily get lost. But if they just concentrate on finding the 3 entries the box should work. If not the box default settings are wrong (like your phone).
Again valid point about the dataplan, if I am paying for a data package I expect a data package. Saying that voip is not allowed is just the mobile companies trying to protect their ludicrous pricing. Would you accept a broadband provider that said you could not access google because they want you to use their own?
