I've recently bought a AAO (Acer Aspire One) and i want to do some modifications on it such as:
1; in built 3g 2; in built bluetooth 3; in built gps However.. for the 3g alone, my plan was using one of the iphone sim cards, which enable you to have internet for 12months with a £10 top up. Has anyone got any information on this at all? Such as: Does it actually work ? (i know it does, however, anyone experienced it?) How fast are the speeds ? (not very fast im aware, but free, so who cares) Does it actually work for 12months ? Whats the coverage like ? Does it work for programs such as MSN, Live Mail, Yahoo, etc. (that use various ports) Are their any constraints? Last but not least.. Does it still actually work? Mike!

All that I know is that you can get the dongle from
http://www.3dongle4free.co.uk/ which can be unlocked. You can get an iphone o2 sim on ebay and when topped up this gives you internet for 12 months (but can be withdrawn) plus wifi via the cloud and bt. The sim is supposed to be used in the iphone but will work in an unlocked dongle. |

As I mentioned unlocking, that set me thinking about its legality?
I know you can go along to the market and get a phone unlocked etc so I assume it is not illegal? So is it legal to publish unlocking software? Dont worry I am not suggesting that we do, just wondered if anyone knew the actual legalities? |

Sorry mate, was catching up on old posts and just saw yours.
I've unlocked my 3's Huwei modem and am using the iPhone PAYG simm since July this year. I get a monthly text saying what month of free internet I am on. So, yes, the 12 month free internet does work. WRT accessible websites... we'll I've been to quite a few websites - email/forums/wiki... prob even been to a couple of dodgy ones too. But, I use it predominantly to connect to work when I'm in the train. So, obviously, remote connect and a secure link connection works great. Depending upon the area, I can get Edge up to HSDPA access... i.e. about 2-3mbps or so... not bad considering its free .I'm sure you've moved on and done your thing, but if you're still struggling, give me a shout and I'll get a tut together for this. Think I saw it in one of the other forums. I'll ask the gent who made it if I can copy it over.

The iphone SIM still works - my Father took my netbook with him to the Highlands and is using it without problems for internet access.
The iphone SIM's have become expensive on Ebay, and as they can be cut-off at anytime if not used in an iphone I would suggest using a different sim. I particularly like giffgaff as they provide cheap calls on payg at 8p, 4p text and giffgaff to giffgaff calls are free. The good thing is that data is free until then end of May. Giffgaff is the low cost version of O2 so should work with the iphone etc. If you want a free sim, drop me a PM with address details, and you and I both get £5 credit when you add £10 top-up :-) I use the sim on my Android phone and very pleased with it.
