Hi mate,

Do you want to compile an image from scratch or just modified one?
If you want to mod a 'blank' image than yes, from gav's guide here: http://ukcvs.org/imagesch/.

If you want to compile it from scratch then there is a bit more work to do like installing unbuntu (linux) or cygwin and then download all the files from the repository - nitr8's guide is good can't remember the url from the top of my head!

Cool, what are you hoping to make, Neutrino or Enigma? For Dbox2 or Dreambox?

I think you mensioned you already have a Linux setup (which one you got?)

First step is getting all the linux tools/addons required, so tell us what sort of image you want and which distro you got and hopefully a few will join in here and get you compiling an image from scratch!

i recently built a tuxbox cvx unbuntu distro. all sat here ready to go, i can dig out my build notes if you want. i got it to the stage of compiling only to find i'll lost al my knowledge of programming so stopped there lol!!!!!!!

INFACT - just found that ''Tuxbox NewMake for dummies" - didn't work perfectly for me but it gave me a good grounding - is it ok to post it here? Big Thanks to Nitr8 for his efforts in compiling it with everyone involved.

i tried 3 different versions of linux - SuSe, Rehat and ubuntu - all were tricky to get the right applications installed but ubuntu was the best - but once they are - MAKE A BACKUP lol - i rebuilt it about 15 times till i got all the correct versions of the software installed.

The bugbear I found with trying to use nitr8's guide (assuming we're talking about the same one) was that I couldn't find a way of Copying 'n Pasting any of the scripts he'd embedded in Code boxes...

This was in a dedicated Ubuntu multi-boot setup. The thought of typing all that stuff into a Terminal console window manually made me give up on the idea of compiling from scratch.

Since then, SS has very kindly helped me with a virtual VM Ubuntu platform which I'm still getting the hang of. But I feel a lot closer to doing a new build than I ever did before, LOL!

Cheers- AL

Yeah, it took me awhile and lots of failed attempts to build the environment from scratch - but i've still got it and it compiles! i've also still got the DW School DBOX2 VMWare image sitting on my hard disk - but it's about a gig too.

I've found my notes i made when building the tuxbox box so to speak lol

Well, if you are happy being a guinea pig.....

First Step.

Using "Synaptic Package Manager" (under System->Administration), check you have the below installed, if not then install them.

Autoconf
Automake
Bison
Bunzip2/Bzip2
CVS
Flex
G++
Gcc
Gettext
Gunzip/Gzip
Libtool
Make
Makeinfo (texinfo)
Patch
Tar

This is just from my rough notes, memory and a quick google, there may be other apps needed, hopefully others will join in here and correct me! Else later there will be build errors and other stuff needs installing.

Carefull of Ubuntu and it's online updates though! It will probably want to install "Dash" which Ubuntu will want to make the default script prog instead of "Bash". This will cause builds to fail, so ensure you have Bash and not Dash installed.

Shout up when done, and as I say, hopefully others will join in and help, maybe if you document exactlly what you do that works, we will end up with a decent tut for others?
