ONLY EVER use "flash without bootloader"

You don't want to risk breaking the boot loader with the other options.

Thanks was about to try!!!!! but what is the bootloader?

just found this on google:-

A boot loader is the first software program that runs when a computer starts. It is responsible for loading and transferring control to the operating system kernel software. The kernel, in turn, initializes the rest of the operating system.

thanks

The bootloader is what controls the box when switched on and loads up the operating system (ie your image).

There is no advantage trying to flash a new bootloader on, if the boot loader goes wrong then the box will not boot!

Have a google on dreambox images called "Gemini" they have something in to wreck the boot loader on clone boxes rendering them useless (unless you can jtag them).

Just only flash "without boot loader" to be safe, else you could brick your box.

I've played with these options in the past. The 'Backup Complete Image' option works, and gives you an image that is 128kb larger than the usual 8,257,356 bytes Flash w/o Bootloader backup.

But if you try to flash such an image back to the dbox, using the 'Flash Complete Image' option, it won't let you, and aborts the operation.

Personally, I'd love to see the Partition Selection options for Backup / Flash find their way into the Personalization Menu !! Because on release images, we could make the Flash w/o Bootloader option the ONLY visible option, with the rest all hidden.

Cheers- AL

Hang on, Bob- isn't this the one that Renny uses for Commando that bypasses that first 'Red Button Expert Functions' menu, and takes you straight to the shortened Backup/Flash 2 line menus, m8?

It's the Partition Selector menu after that, which I'm on about chopping down to one single entity, for everday use: Flash w/o Bootloader

No other options in there are really valid, nor needed, in a jffs2 image, surely?

Cheers- AL
