You'll need VLC and read pt-1's guide: http://pt-1.net/

in vista turn off the "use sharing wizard"

open an windows explorer > select "tools" > select "view" > scroll down > untick it > click apply and close

now you can share your folder using the proper sharing options

Do you want to stream a video from your PC to your Dbox? You don't need to share anything, just use VLC, it works on XP and 7 (which should be the closest to vista!) with no problems whatsoever on my end ! From pt-1's guide: Recording/Streaming/3rdParty->MoviePlayer via VLC

ok guys got it working..

its a problem with vlc..
no matter what i do ..ie change the shortcut in vlc or use the cmd option i cant get vlc to start as a start up service?..

the only way i could get it working is to start vlc by double clicking it then minimise it so its running all the time...

i can now watch all my films from my 500gig external hard-drive wirelessly over the network...cool

thanks for the help lads

Maybe try this: Streaming via VLC and windows 7
Working for me on Windows 7, maybe the same can be applied to vista? It's not as neat as if it was a service but better than doing it manually and minimising it!
