Hi,
Hope this thread is ok (seen a similar thread lower down that was closed) but I am hoping for some advice on whether to go dbox or dream. I've had a dbox for quite a few years and I'm very happy with it so when I was asked by my Uncle to source him one I immediately went looking online for dboxes. As I've looked about I've begun thinking would he be better of with a 500C clone rather than a dbox. I've read the thread about clones and that makes me feel a clone would be ok but I've no experience with a dream and I'll be the one who has to drive over and flash his box if it goes off. Firstly would you say I am right in thinking a new 500C clone would be a better buy than a dbox. Unless I'm mistaken any dbox I buy will be quite old and used. Secondly if I'm happy flashing a dbox will I be ok with a dreambox? Is the process similar (ftp) but the passwords and file locations are different? Even better does anyone know if it possible to flash a box remotely assuming I set up his router to allow me in? Thanks for your time. |

I think the Dreamboxes are much better in many aspects. Reliability, newer hardware, faster processors, interchangeable tuners... etc etc. Have a read on the forum and you shall be enlightened
.There's loads of images available for all the dreamboxes - quite a few of them are made by our very own developers - you'll see them branded with the UKCvs logo. there's even a great tutorial by our very own Turner on You Tube!! Have heard loads of people claiming that 500 clones are absolutely kosher for the job. I'm sure they are... however, I'd prefer to go for the original personally. Yes, all that you want is possible... and its all out there in the forums. Please take some time and go through the various threads and you shall have all the information you need. If you're still struggling, feel free to raise a question and we'll get to you. In the meantime, please take a minute and introduce yourself in the Introductions forum

Visually
Dbox is better with the LCD display Reliability Dreambox 500 better, brand new modern box. Also if it did fault you can buy a brand new main board for it pretty cheap. Dbox is old, stopped making them years ago. Image availability Dbox better, more UK based images around, but UK dreambox images are coming along now. Stability Dreambox. It was designed to run public firmware, Dbox was hacked to do it but does a cracking job anyway. Depends what you expect and want from a box, don't be put off about clones, better PSU's and tuners anyway. Dream stopped making genuine DM500 boxes a while ago (they do make new 500 ones now but they are OE firmware so far less public support). Personally, If I needed another box I would go for a 500 clone, but still love my dbox2. I also have a genuine dm7025, good box but don't think it was worth the money. SS

i'm just waiting on my new dm500c (clone) arriving any day now, bought it a few days ago. They working in pretty much the same way - wanted to try them side by side but i'm kinda wishing i'd gone for a eurovox ex7000hd instead of the new 500.
hey i'll probably be selling 1 or the other in a week or 2! |

Thanks for the replies. I'm reassured now that a 500 clone is the way to go. The reliability issue is the one that swings it. I'd feel responsible if my uncle buys a dbox on my recommendation only for it to fail. My other concern was how good the support for the dreamboxes was compared to the dbox in the event something or other happens but it sounds ok.
Thanks. Sorry for not posting in introductions, I thought I had ages ago but just searched and I guess I didn't. I'll pop over there now. |

I started this thread awhile ago and I've finally got round to ordering a box (who would have thought a new baby would take up so much time).
In the end I orders a 500 and a 600 and here's what I think now they have arrived. Firstly, they are tiny. I didn't have a clue, when the box arrived at the door I thought I'd been had. It was a pleasant surprise. The smaller size (compared to a dbox) is very wife friendly. The downside is the lack of a LCD display but that's not a major loss. Images. I'm used to dbox so I found it a bit confusing at first (but I found loading dbox confusing at first). There are quite a few different formats and I did worry that I'd load the wrong type but in the end I think I was worrying without reason. Again perhaps it is familiarity but I agree with previous poster that dbox images are much better for the uk user. I tried the commando image on the 500 and I suddenly felt all warm and comfortable. I've just not found a similar image for the 600. All in all I'm impressed with the dreams and the size really made me think about keeping one and giving uncle my dbox but in the end I've still got my dbox with it's commando image. |
