Default nGRAB - Does it work better than NFS

Hello,
I posted earlier in a thread that I´m getting problems with NFS recordings/playback on my older DM 500 devices.
Actually I found an option/menu that allows so called "ngrab" recording.

Does anybody got some positve experience with this software package ?
If yes, where I can find it?

I´m looking since long time for a solution regarding my problems I got with my smaller boxes and NFS.

* If ngrab is working how it´ll be setup?
* How´s the quality?
* Does VLC have something to do with ngrab?

As I understood the software have to be installed as a service on Windows systems ... the only question will it work with newer version i.e. Vista/Windows 7?

I think if this is going to work better I would setup for i.e a small Windows Server ( Windows Home Server ) to get my Videos recorded/playback. From this server I plan to get get access with a small Video client ( WD TV Live,Twonkeymedia) and watch the movies recorded ...

I know ... my configuration sounds a bit complicated but when you´re trying for weeks every complicated working solutuion is better than build in functions that doesn´t.

Any replies were very welcome ... also existing working configuration for a "Dreambox Entertainment System" where you can select anytime what movie should play :-)

Thank you !

Cheers
Andy.

Hi Andy,

Don't have any experiences with dreamboxes but I hope my knowledge of dboxII with NFS and neutrino images will do!
You mentioned I think in your other post that you have a couple of NAS, I think it would be best for you to put all your movie files in there and set your (neutrino based?) dreambox image to record to the NAS.
Personally, I don't use a NAS to do that but a linux box running a NFS server, recording and playbacks are working fairly well with the odd problem time to time.
So basically with this setting, you are mounting a drive using NSF and use direct file recording to tape your programs.

I think ngrab is more a record as you stream protocol and I think jack the grabber supports (or xmedia player or whatever it's called these days) but I wouldn't recommend it as it requires a windows box running all the time.... and since you have a NAS, use it!

I don't know why you had problems recording/playback from your NAS, the resident specialist on that is Speedy I think, but I haven't seen him around in a while.

Have another go with NAS (explain any problems experienced so that we can help), if it's not working, then the half house solution is streaming already downloaded programmes from a PC (using VLC)... recording is not as good this way... but we'll get there if needed!

Good luck

Hello FreddyFr0g,
thank you very much your hints :-)
I just downloaded the Neutrino Imaga from Schaedelmeister ... I don´t know him but it should work by the comments. Next step will be to download / install the image from your site ...
I´ll setup the system and hopefully it´ll be working. Otherwise I maybe have to exchange the networking parts I´m currently using. ( TP 1000MBit switch, 8port, maybe this is the weak point )
I´ll try and then I´m coming back to you ... today will be long evening/night I think.

Cheers,
Andreas
