Default Dm500s psu

Oh no! AL's C14.4 Testbox has gone down, right in the middle of testing something BIG with LraiZer..

Box is fine, as I just swapped it out with the one in the lounge. It's the PSU I suspect to be the culprit. My multimeter is reading 11.8vDC upstairs, and the box won't even fire up. Downstairs, the PSU is reading 12.2vDC

Is this 0.4vDC difference enough to cause this problem do you think?

Cheers- AL

0.4v in my opinion won't be the issue, but I'd guess the voltage drops a lot more when it is actually connected and under load, as your probably testing with your meter without the box connected.

Modern multimeters have a very high input impedance so sometimes they can read a healthy voltage ok when a faulty supply don't have the current behind it to maintain voltage under load.

Take the lid off and read the voltage when connected.

Still, a new psu should be easy to obtain, your local RS, Farnell or Maplin should sell something similar.

Thanks for that info, SS- if anyone knows about PSUs, it's you, m8!

Back up and running now with a temporary fix. Rummaged in my old spares box up in the loft, and found a 12v 1.2A 3 pin adaptor with the correct + tip end, from the 4 Port Netgear Hub that I retired 3 years ago. Works perfick, and is barely warm to the touch after an hour or two of use.

But conscious of the fact that I bought TWO dm500s boxes nearly two years ago, and that both PSUs are left on 24/7, I was worried that the lounge box psu downstairs might die soon, too. So I bought one of these on fleaBay:

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Terrific value, don't you think? I'll feedback here on how this unit performs wth a DM500S in a few days, in case it helps others in the same quandry. 2A rating should be OK for a motorized setup as well, shouldn't it?

Cheers- AL

Might be worth asking the seller why the detailed picture of the PCB is a lot different to the 2 pictures above it

AL, check it`s not your step down power line trannie, [ if it has one ] i had this with a DM500 clone, and it was low voltage that was the culprit, once i change the lead everything was fine....
