Default UDP streaming?

Hi.

I was wondering if there is an image that correctly supports UDP streaming. Also, which do you think is the best?

Currently I use Pli Jade, but it only has support for HTTP streaming, which breaks quite often due to network error and the connection is permanently lost (I have to hit VLC's play button again and again...).

Thanks!

Try the Zapstreaming feature in OpenPLi, m8. Not tested it myself, as streaming isn't something I've ever needed to use, nor ever likely to...

Hi and thanks for your answers.

OpenPLI for DM500 include by default streamsec, streampes, streamts, udpstreampes, streamtsfile, streames and zapstream. Out of these, only udpstreampes has UDP capabilities. The rest are TCP based.

TCP means there is a stateful connection. UDP has a stateless connection.

TCP guarantees that data packets (in our case image+audio) are sent and received without errors. Unfortunately this also means that packets which are lost are resent and the receiver waits for it, thus the receiving party (VLC) might lag behind the sender. This becomes quite annoying after some time in case of not-so-good network connections or network congestion. Also, VLC (which is the receiving party) is bloating memory usage and can become unstable and crash after some time if it lags behind the sender (DM500) for too much time.

UDP on the other hand throws packets to the receiving party (VLC on my PC) without caring about lost packets and even about the order in which they are received.

That's what I need, a good UDP streamer for a DM500. The only one included till now is "udpstreampes". I didn't have good results with it. There should also be included a "udpstreamts" (which uses TS stream instead of DVB stream if I understand well) and should have better results. But I don't see that included in any image till now...

@Satsearching and/or Renwich:

Please can you see if udpstreamts is an option that can be added in a tuxbox enigma / neutrino build? If so, let's include it in the ukcvs-svn, as it looks as if we finally have a fully-qualified 'streaming Tester' available here!

Cheers- AL

Looking at a makefile in /cdk, it looks like it is just rem'd out.

Code:
flash-streampes: $(appsdir)/dvb/tools/stream/streampes $(appsdir)/dvb/zapit/src/zapit | $(flashprefix)/root
 $(INSTALL) $(appsdir)/dvb/tools/stream/streamsec $(flashprefix)/root/sbin
 $(INSTALL) $(appsdir)/dvb/tools/stream/streamts $(flashprefix)/root/sbin
 $(INSTALL) $(appsdir)/dvb/tools/stream/streampes $(flashprefix)/root/sbin
 $(INSTALL) $(appsdir)/dvb/tools/stream/udpstreampes $(flashprefix)/root/sbin
# $(INSTALL) $(appsdir)/dvb/tools/stream/udpstreamts $(flashprefix)/root/sbin
# $(INSTALL) $(appsdir)/dvb/zapit/src/.libs/udpstreampes $(flashprefix)/root/sbin
 touch $(flashprefix)/root
Are you able to do a build yourself? If not I can try one for you to test, but need feedback as streaming isn't my thing either.

Well spotted, SS! But 'ang on a m0, m8- summat else doesn't look quite right in there...

udpstreampes looks to be active in there, but it's associated (??) zapit / .lib component is rem'd out on the last line?

Cheers- AL

Well, test builds can be done with all combinations to see what happens if we can get feedback?

I'm more concerned why those lines are rem'd out, must be a good reason for it?

Well, I will provide feedback on it, because I really need to test udpstreamts. I have no clue why it's commented out, but there are reports of people compiling their own image for DM500 with udpstreamts, and they say it's working... I would compile my own image if I knew how and I had a better PC.

I also found udpstreamts for DM7025 ready-compiled, but it won't work on DM500, I guess it's different arhitecture...
