You cannot beat a proper comport.

I regular have to use comport to configure GSM modems, PLC's and various other wierd machine control crap including bespoke microcontroller cards.

Most modern pc's and laptops don't come with a real comport, however my new company HP laptop actually did.

I had to get a PCI com port board for my home box, it now always works with whatever hardware I throw at it (home or work oddball hardware).

I'm with AL on this one, tried various usb adapters here before, they work to an extent with some hardware, but not all.

My pci comport board always works.

I agree with Mags on this suggestion, as it will give you a 'real' RS232 IRQ COM port, which can then be configured in Device Manager 'as' COM1 or COM2 (swapping the existing integrated COM port that feeds through to the docking station port). DreamUP is happy with either COM1 or COM2. My compaq desktop PC here has two com ports, and I use COM2 for the DM500.

The PCMCIA > RS232 adaptors used to be VERY expensive, but the one that Mag's links to is a mere £6-50 !! Here's another one I just found on fleaBay - £6-89 buy it now, with FREE P&P from Hong Kong!

It's a no-brainer, IF your lappy has a PCMCIA slot, that is...

Cheers- AL

Hi

I have dream up on a old sony laptop
I have always used the laptop to bring back to live dm500c’s (after blank screens)
And also the 2 dm 500s’s I Iam now using
For some reason one of the sat boxes every now and then stops before the flash is finished
What I have since done is flash erase the dreambox a good few times before flashing an image
And this seems to do the job and the box flashes ok
I read somewhere on dm500's its best to flash erase for every old flash to clear the dm500 small memory
Eg tried 3 images flash erase 3 times before flashing an image to the dm500

Hope this may help bob
