Default moved to sat since n3 with dm500s - help with dish

ive pointed my dish in the same direction as all the dish's in the street.

although my dish is a 80cm solid dish - not the 60cm mesh dish sky provides you with.

ive pointed it to 28.2e (astra) - i am getting on the reading on the dm500s:

SNR: 63% (not moving)
AGC: 85%-95% (flickering)
BER: 0% (not moving)

currently i cannot pick up any freeview channels and when i do a transponder scan it picks up nothing?
(by this it said it could not lock into satalite)

any suggestions?

ive read somewhere i need SNR and AGC @ 95%+ and BER @ 0?

is dish in a random 28.2e direction or have you used a satmeter to align dish? id make sure dish is properly aligned with a satmeter first, move dish until you hear beep then turn satmeter signal up to half way and fine tune.

i do not have access to a satmeter thats the only thing.
i have randomly put it in the direction of 28.2e, going by eye from neighbours and using dishpointer website.

is it 100% necessary to use a satmeter?

ps there is a satfind option on the dm500s image - would this be applicable?

ive only installed one dish myself so im no expert and im sure the sat experts have more advise, but i know my satmeter saved myself a couple of days climbing up a ladder trying to align my dish down to 15 easy minutes. i didnt realize even trying to tighten up the dish bracket nuts would throw the signal out so much. the minutest of deviation from 100% off sat position dropped the signal on my satmeter. im guessing aligning blind is going to be a nightmare.

cheers for the reply, so a satmeter is required, how much are these? a quick search on the internet brought up £50+.

no way am i paying that just to use once.

im really confused now - as cable side was soooooo easy!
obviously its going to be a learning curve and im sure that its going to be straight forward once this dish is in the correct position..

any advise?
or fancy borrowing me your sat meter? lmao.. (joke)

Your best bet is to connect up an old portable tv with your box and take that outside with you, then you can use the on screen satfind from the image,

if this is not feasible then maybe try move the tv near a window where you can at least hear it even if it needs full volume on,

if this is a fixed dish then dont forget to skew the lnb,
or if its motorized then point it south first and tell the box to drive it to 28.2e and then tweak it,as letting the motor turn it will set the skew

A dish is very focused, you can't point it in a rough direction like a Yagi TV antenna. Offset dishes are confusing as you don't know exactlly where they are pointing.

Get a cheapo meter, either online or your local Maplin. And when you do get a signal, you then need to verify you are picking up the right satellite. Just being 2' out will get the wrong satellite.

Watch out for a Sat dish installer in your locality, and accost him. For the price of a couple of pints, he'll happily pop up his ladder with his mega-bucks meter and align your dish spot-on accurately, m8!

Cheers- AL
