Question New to iphone

Hi there , i am about to purchase an iphone and will be taking it with me on holiday to PERU -South america ! Was just wondering what this Jailbreak means and what benefits it gives to have it done ?? I realise that it helps unlock the phone to more service operators but a little info and a push in the right direction to achieve this !! Thanks mentorman !

First off - Good choice. Doubt you'll regret it .

Jailbreak - This is a process by which you 'untie' your phone from Apple's bonds to use ONLY Apple approved applications from the Appstore.
Basically, there are hundreds of applications out there which are not available on the Appstore, and, which you may want to install on your iPhone.
Also, this gives you the ability to be able to RUN unlocking applications to ultimately unlock your mobile from using O2.
Remember, jailbreaking does NOT mean that your phone is unlocked. You will only be able to use the O2 SIMM card.

Unlocking - This is the process by which you completely free yourself from being bound by Apple's appstore or O2's clutches.
In short, you can install ANY application you want (appstore or cydia...!) AND use any network you desire, in any country of your choice (as long as it is a 2/3g simm card).

Give us a shout if you get stuck anywhere. Make sure you read the constraints on the iPhone Dev Team's blog regarding their tools and which firmwares they apply to.

The latest firmware is 3.1. Check your iPhone's current firmware before you jailbreak/unlock/upgrade and make the decision that's most suited to you.

a tip be careful with the jailbreak.... i just came back from abroad and switched off data roaming...

cut a story short i had to rebuild my iphone .... and cydia for some reason bypassed the data roaming off... downloaded 13 meg which ended up been a 80 notes hit.... so be careful when you go abroad as cydia and most of the jbreak apps seem to act differently...
