Default AVM Fritz! Products Information

I have already provided some additional Information on these nice little in some of the Other Forums I am around but will try to update this post here to the latest Information.

What is the Fritz!Box everyone is talking about?

It is (based on the Fritz!Box Fon WLAN) :
  • Broadband Modem & Router
  • 1x Ethernet and 1x USB Port (newer Boxes have 2x Ethernet and 1x USB Host for USB HDD or Memory Sticks etc)
  • 1x Analog or ISDN 2 INPUT
  • 2x Analog Output (little telephone switch !!) (Newer Boxes have even 3 analog extensions)
  • VoIP via Internet
Who makes this Box and are there techical details in English?
  • The company called AVM in Berlin Germany used to manufacture ISDN Cards when most of the German Deutsche Telekom Phone Infrastructure was changed from analog to Digital exchanges. They usually subsidised the change to an BRI ISDN 2 and a lot of people purchased ISDN Cards to sue as Internet Access or FAX etc.

Please see their Homepage for the technical details

So what can you do with it ?
  • Use it to replace your existing Internet Modem/Router and even Restrict your Internet Traffic in order to have enough bandwidth for VoIP Calls.
  • Use it behind your existing Internet Modem/Router to supply you with 2 or more Extensions for incoming Internet Calls via your Housephone(s) and route calls either using your existing landline or through the Internet without the need to have seperate Phone Lines like with other VoIP Providers.
  • Keep track via a Webinterface of Incoming and outgoing calls
  • Use 3rd Party Software/Firmware to display incoming calls on your PC/DBox/Dreambox/XBOX with XBMC
  • Dial from your PC for your Handset either via the built in Webinterface or via Outlook
  • Send and receive Faxes from your Windows PC via Landline or Internet through a Fax Plugin
So what is my Setup at home ?
  • Sly+ 160 with the "Eye" in every room
  • 2x DBox 2 Sat with Multicam.NG (Another Story) running the Neutrino GUI
  • 3x XBox running XBMC (Lounge&Bedroom&Kids) via Network
  • FritzBox Fon WLan with 8 MBit Broadband (running behind a Netgear N Wireless Router)
How do I use it all ?
  • I registered with www.sipgate.co.uk and they provide you with a free UK Number (Or German) that everybody can call and they ring on your house phones.
  • Incoming calls show on my "server" and my DBox's and my XBox's
  • You can buy credit with them so you can make outgoing calls via the Internet and your landline stays free (Kids) and you even get a Mailbox with them.
  • You can even use "Softphone" on your PC or real SIP Clients on your PC (needs either Asterisk installed on the Fritz!Box or the latest Fritz!Box 7270 for example that runs a SIP Server)
  • In Germany a reverse Lookup of the incoming call with a name and address is possible via the Internet
  • Call Log in HTML on any PC
Were can I get these AVM Fritz!Boxes?
  • As usual the best place is Ebay in Germany but you may be able to purchase them from Sipgate in the UK or other re-sellers
Do they do all above out of the Box?
  • No ! If you buy a German Broadband marketed Box and want to use it as a UK Broadband Modem using ADSL you need to install a Annex A hack. More Information here (you can post in English)

Older Boxes are around £20 on Ebay
  • You need to either enable the Telnet Mode via a DTMF Command (#96*7*)from one of the Phones or download a "PSEUDO" Software from this page.

Make sure the latest Software is installed on the Fritz!Box in order to enable the Telnet Mode and many other mods as the latest Versions also update the Linux Kernel

Most Information you can find on the Web is probably in German but usually the chaps from the IP-Phone Forum will answer in English if needed.

Many changes leave a notification in the Webinterface that Changes that do not comply to the Manufacturers recomendation have been made. This does not affect the functionality and a Factory reset can usually erase all traces and get the unit back to it's old state.
