Why is VOIP not more popular?
Probably because most people find it difficult.... to understand the concept, what's involved, the hardware & setup. ![]() It gives me a headache anyway. ![]() Many people I know can't even set up a cable wireless router, never mind voip! I was inspired by this forum to set-up sips on a Nokia N series smartphone. After signing up with voipbuster I discovered that sips wouldn't work out of the box. Nokia (or the mobile phone company firmware), have crippled the later additions of these phones. I had to do a lot of Googeling to find the additional files for the phone, then register with a nokia developer forum before I could get the files signed...etc. In the end it worked, and you do get a great feeling of achievement! ![]() I have an "all you can eat" data plan with t-mobile, but as far as I can tell the contract excludes the use of voip/sips - you get charged extra or you have to change plan to include it! I think you also need to set up a different sips profile if you use another access point & then switch between them as required! ![]() So I can only use sips via the wifi. Couldn't agree more though that it should be more popular...... just need the time to work it all out. ![]() |

Agree about setting things up, as I said earlier, a setup should only require 3 entries to be made. Do agree that most hardware has so many settings that an average person can very easily get lost. But if they just concentrate on finding the 3 entries the box should work. If not the box default settings are wrong (like your phone). Again valid point about the dataplan, if I am paying for a data package I expect a data package. Saying that voip is not allowed is just the mobile companies trying to protect their ludicrous pricing. Would you accept a broadband provider that said you could not access google because they want you to use their own? Vote with your feet and your pocket. (comments not aimed at Tyke - just my rants) Thanks Tyke - your comments are very valid

Don't even get me started on voip ffs. As you may know from previous postings I have mines all set up nicely and working like a charm. My sister has just recently moved house to a very poor reception area (She always just used mobiles) Now I have given her FREE an old usb voip phone. She has a er modified cable modem, I have also donated an old router for her so she can even set the usb voip phone (Which works perfectly BTW) in any room in the house. But hell no not my dear sister. She calls us up almost daily (which being a bloke I fookin hate btw.....but hey don't women LOVE to talk). So anyway she calls us up and all I hear is stutter static and can you hear me now hello hello hello. Now when I see her number either the misses answers and puts up with it or I ignore/reject it.
For the sake of 2 mins she would have voip all set up.....gawd I even set her an account up with a number in and 10 euro credit.....there is most probably free mins remaining on the account. I Hate her for not using VOIP lol. If she were to fork out another £20 then she could connect her old landline up as well which is a hands free. Now I have given up. I don't even mention it any more. Sorry for the rant. But yeah I love voi lol. |
