Default 0300 numbers

Well, at last HMG seems to have woken up to the fact that their electorate will NOT be ripped-off by being forced to dial 0870 or 0871 to call outfits like the DVLC and TV Licensing.

Hooray- and thanks to www.saynoto0870.com they have now switched to using 0300 numbers instead. A quick google suggests that calling an 0300 number is the SAME price as calling any other UK landline from your fixed or mobile phone. And if you're on a free minutes package with either, the 0300 call will be FREE as well- within the times applicable to your package.

So what about VOIP and their treatment of 0300 calls? Look at their Rates table, and it's very vague on this point... So I sent voipstunt an email:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UK Landline rates
_________________

Please- I think you need to be more specific in your definition of 'National Rate' in the UK Tariffs

Is this for 0870/0871 numbers?

How do you define 0300 numbers, please? Normal landline, or 'National Rate' ???

Thanks- AL

Their reply will be interesting, if I get one, LMAO!!!

Cheers- AL

Good luck getting a reply from voipstunt AL.

Pretty sure the 03 number range is as you have described i.e. treated as a landline number. I did try calling the BBC (they use 03) and checked the bill online and it was free.

Betamax/finaraea can change their prices at any time so always best to make a quick test call.

OFCOM has determined that they are at geographic rates with (I believe) 0300 being a free number.

The original intent of 0845/0870 was to be local and national rate but they soon became premium rate, the 03xx numbers are supposed to be a replacement for the 08xx number range but really at free/local/national rate. Time will tell how many telecom companies honour that or how quickly they can get around it.
