I'm long time member of a couple of related forums. You may or may not recognise my user handle but I don't post much (I can use the search facility!!

). Another forum I'm a member of doesn't seem to be as busy these days as it once was and I've previously seen references to this place. After a few browses I decided to sign up.

I'm a technical architect/developer by trade. I work in 3GLs, C and Oracle (bits of SQLServer). I have experience with basic C++ and debugging WIN32 COM objects but haven't written anything from scratch in them. I have UNIX make & configure experience on HPUX and Solaris with my C work. I can also knock up a shell script and/or a perl script with the help of some trusty books! I have minimal javascript, html and java experience too. Nothing major though.

Re: The basics.
I consider myself pretty savvy with the basics of the images. Flashing, converting FTA images, updating files etc. Though I've recently had some strange problems I've posted on another forum that I've never encountered before, but will continue working on tonight. You may have seen the thread...

Re: Image compilation.
I had a go at compiling a CVS image a couple of years ago. That attempt was scuppered by hardware failures.

Just recently I've installed Ubuntu on a dual boot desktop. All dependencies are resolved and vino/ssh/port forwarding are all set up for remote connections (sadly, the firewall at work filters me out!

).

I've had a few problems with that build (as detailed in the other forum) but I'm confident I'll be able to get around them when I revisit. I will probably back up and restart from scratch as this forum has a new guide.

I suffer from free-time issues (with having a young kid and another on the way) and motivation issues (with me doing a full day on the PC, sometimes I just don't want to know). But this looks like a forum that encourages devs and so is right up my street. Hopefully I can get involved and, with a bit of encouragement I can provide some decent input.
